Is 19-sensor EEG neurofeedback FDA Approved?

Customers often ask this question; is neurofeedback FDA approved? Neurofeedback is a technique known as EEG-operant conditioning. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for this category of devices is classified into Classes I, II, III. Reboot uses Class II medical devices that are approved by the FDA.

According to the website, the FDA is responsible for protecting the public by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices. The FDA is responsible for advancing public health by speeding innovations that make medical products more effective, safer, and more affordable.

There are three levels of classification by the FDA for such devices. Class I devices have the lowest regulation level because they present a minimal level of risk for harm.

Devices in Class II are those for which special controls are deemed necessary by the FDA. These controls are essential to assuring the effectiveness of devices. Plus, this level of oversight ensures that compliance methods are in place. Reboot uses FDA approved Class II.

Class III devices require the strictest regulation because they generally support or sustain human life. As stated, Reboot uses approved Class II amplifiers to acquire EEG and perform neurofeedback.

Customized Neurofeedback generally shows changes in approximately 8 sessions. Neurofeedback is shown to be effective in three in four people.  Our clinicians closely monitor your progress and results to improve the program in any way.

The industry standard is 2 sessions per week for best results.

Results tend to improve over time with positive and large effects observed after 6 months of treatment, typically with no ongoing sessions needed after the initial program. Essentially, once the brain has learned the new brain activity pattern, it can then access this desired behaviour at any stage in the future, as long as the activity has been properly trained.

You do not need a referral for treatment. Based on your intake interview a trained therapist will decide whether Neurofeedback is the right treatment for you.

Brainwaves have different patterns in different people, even within a population of people with ADHD, or sleep issues, for example. We need to do a QEEG assessment beforehand, to see which type of brain activity you have, and then we will be able to decide on a Neurofeedback protocol that is more likely to have a positive effect for you. Other Neurofeedback providers who do not offer a complete and thorough, evidence-based QEEG assessment, may be relying on a one size fits all or a trial-and-error approach and we do not believe this is appropriate.

It is not necessary to stop or reduce medication to start therapy. As symptoms get better though, many clients work with their doctor to reduce or stop medication, which is a great benefit of Neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback has been studied for several decades, a search on PubMed shows over 4800 research articles on its effectiveness. Google may show varying experiences, but there are many approaches to Neurofeedback and unfortunately, little uniformity in the field. The quality of Neurofeedback equipment and practitioner credentials vary.

Reboot’s protocols are derived from evidence based research including the following studies:
Garcia Pimenta et al., 2021
Researchers confirmed the effectiveness of Neurofeedback when personalized with a Quantitative EEG assessment. They also demonstrated that results improve when this method is used in combination with parental interventions, psychotherapy, sleep hygiene maintenance as well as nutritional advice.
Van Doren et al., 2018
In a systematic review and meta-analysis researchers looks at data from more than 500 children with ADHD from 10 randomized controlled trials, comparing the effects of Neurofeedback with ‘active treatments’ (including medication and ‘non-active’ (no treatment) conditions. They found Neurofeedback had long-lasting effects after an average of 6 months, with no ongoing therapy sessions needed after the initial program compared to the group which was still taking medication at follow-up. At the follow up, the effects of Neurofeedback were comparable to the effects of medication.
Arns et al., 2012
An earlier paper demonstrated the results of the ‘individualized’ Neurofeedback approach – also called QEEG informed Neurofeedback. The research also found that personalized Neurofeedback treatment could potentially double clinical treatment effects.
